What is RDP?
Remote Desktop Protocol is Microsoft's method for streaming a Windows session to another device and sending keyboard, mouse and peripheral input back. It has shipped with Windows for more than twenty years, and clients exist for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android, which is a large part of why it became the default everywhere.
People use it in two quite different ways, and mixing them up causes most of the confusion around licensing.

RDP vs RDS: the difference in one line
RDP is the transport that carries the session. RDS is the server role that lets many sessions exist at the same time. You can use RDP without RDS, but you cannot run a multi user session host without RDS or something that replaces it, which is exactly the space Citrix occupies.
What is Citrix?
Citrix DaaS, sold for years as Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops, delivers virtual desktops and individual applications from a centrally managed environment. Most articles present these two as rivals standing on opposite sides of a ring. That framing is wrong, and it leads people to budget incorrectly.
Citrix does not replace Microsoft session hosting. It builds on it.
